He held the kiss for a few moments as the lights turned off and he stood back a little, looking into her eyes, a little surprised that the kitchen hadn't exploded around them. He smiled a little when he saw how calm she was. So not quite the reaction he was expecting, but it was the kind of unexpected he was happy to see. He felt her hands on his shoulders and he gently rest his hands on her sides, stroking her sides gently as she spoke. He looked into her eyes and smiled softly as she said his name. Reaching up, he gently lift his hand and stroked her cheek.
"Kaylee, I've cared for you for so long. I just want to see you happy. That's why I've been trying so hard to help you master your powers. I know being in control will make you happy."
He reached up and gently took her hands from his shoulders, holding them gently in his.
"I've wanted to tell you for so long, but I could never find the right time. But I just couldn't hold it in anymore."
He smiled softly, staring into her eyes.

Kaylee-Anne listened closely, hearing what he had to say and feeling so many confusing things all at once. Mark had always been like a big brother and a best friend, having this romantic confession certainly took her off guard, especially now after he'd moved away from the mansion and she was stuck there.
"Mark I... I had no idea." She looked down at his chest, trying to find the right words to say, "I... I guess I just, I never thought about us like this before."
She looked back up at him, "I am happy, a lot of the time I think about how lucky I am to have people like you that care. You've always been so sweet to me, I guess I just thought it was because you felt sorry for me." She hesitated before going on, "I care about you too..."

He watched her as she gave her response. He listened silently, knowing somehow what was coming as she spoke. He wasn't surprised when she told him how she felt. He lowered his head a little. He wasn't all that upset, but he knew deep down that she didn't feel for him the way he felt for her. He looked down at her and smiled a bit, taking the hand that was resting on his chest.
"You care about me, but not the way I care about you. I understand. You don't feel that way now, but I'm willing to wait. You might develop feelings for me, you might not. Just as long as you're happy, I'll be happy."
He reached up and gently stroked her cheek as he stared into her eyes. He cared so much for her, he was willing to wait for her.
"I never felt sorry for you. When I first saw you, I saw someone having just as much trouble as I did when I first got my powers. I helped you because I knew you would need someone by your side who believed in you. When I started to get to know you, it wasn't hard to believe you have potential. I know you can do this, Kaylee. You just have to believe in yourself the way I believe in you."
He held her hands as he spoke, then let them go and stepped back a little, turning and picking the cookie dough up again.

She'd hurt him, she knew she had, and her heart ached to have that happen. Mark was one of the most important people in her life, and she'd rather die than make him unhappy. As he spoke she looked up at him with large and tearful eyes. She wasn't happy, now she was so unhappy. Once again she'd managed to mess everything up. But even so there was nothing to be done about it. She didn't even realize how much he cared about her, she was still in many ways a very young girl.
When he turned away she just dropped her hands to her side and looked at the ground between them, not knowing what to say. She'd wanted this evening to be fun, and for them to be like how they were back when he went to school there, now she was worried it would just be awkward.

He stood for a moment with his back to her, keeping his shoulders straight and his head held high. He knew she wouldn't return his feelings, but it didn't make it hurt any less. He grit his teeth and swallowed to keep calm. He wouldn't lose his cool, he had to be confident for Kaylee. He turned and smiled to her, reaching out, he stroked her arm gently.
"It's ok, Kas. I understand. C'mon, let's go work out in the Danger Room."
He turned with her and started out into the hall, looking back with a smile as he waited for her to follow. He'd wait for her. He'd been waiting for her for a few years now, he'd wait a little longer. For now, he figured it'd be best to train with her in the Danger Room where they were shielded.
"So how have things been around the school lately?"
He looked back over at her, smiling softly as he walked with her.

Kaylee clasped her hands together behind her as she walked beside Mark, glad that he too seemed to want things back to normal. She didn't want things to change between them, then she might loose him. She smiled up at him, trying not to flush about the fact that she'd techinically just had her first kiss. She didn't mind that it was with Mark. "Oh. It hasn't been too bad actually. I have a new friend, or at least I think he's my friend. He seems kind of crouchy sometimes. But he's nice. He trains with me sometimes..." She thought about the disaster in the Danger room that happened awhile back. She hadn't trained in there since. It had been so horrible. But with Mark she felt safe.

He looked over at her and smiled as they walked. He hoped they could make things work. If not as significant others, then as friends. He listened to her story about her new friend and he smiled a little, glad she was making friends. He cocked his head to the side when she mentioned training interested.
"Really? That's great. What are his powers?"
He stopped at the entrance to the Danger Room and punched in his code. The door slid open and he walked in with her, pulling the keyboard out of the wall and starting to pull up his special program for her. He'd been working on this one since his last visit. He pulled a flash drive out of his pocket and put it in the port, pulling up the files on it to put together the program as he listened to Kaylee talk about her new friend.

Kaylee hesitated before following him inside. She watched him work at the computer and wondered what he had up his sleeve. She hated to dissapoint him like she seemed to do with everyone else, but she hated the idea of telling him she didn't want to do this either, so she stayed as she was and tapped her fingernail against her teeth.
"You mean other than sniffing cookies?" She smiled to herself at her personal joke, "Well, I think he's incredibly strong, stronger than most anyone else, and there's something else..." Her words trailed off, remembering his ability to raise death-like beings that looked like something righ tout of a nightmare.

He looked over at her as she thought, then raised an eyebrow as she mentioned sniffing cookies. But she seemed to have made a personal joke, so he didn't ask. She described her new friend's powers and he looked over at her, wondering why she was leaving something off. He turned to her before he started the program and put his hand on her shoulder.
"I know you don't want to do this, Kas, but I know you better than anyone else here. I'm one of the few people here who can truly help you. I can't come by whenever you decide you feel like it. We have to do this now, I don't know when I can come by next. I'm sorry."
He send the program to work and the room filled with computerized machines. But in the center of the room was the one thing that could comfort her and relax her.
"Now just relax."

Slowly Kaylee-Anne nodded. He was right, as always. Besides Arik Mark was the only person she felt truly safe with and probably the only person she'd ever felt comfortable with. With a sigh she closed her eyes and tried to relax. She trusted that nothing would happen to them, not like what had happened with Arik...
She remembered the afternoon in the Danger Room when it seemed like the computer had decided it was time for them to die. The levels kept going higher and higher until they were in the middle of a war.
