This was what made life worth living! The little surprises in live that make one remember they were alive. It was what Metal lived for, and as the gunfire erupted back and forth and all around, he couldn't suppress the mad giggles and laughter that burst past his scarred and metal lips.
It was supposed to be a simple burglary. Break into the liquor store, steal what was needed, rob the cash register, and get out. But no, the little Asian man had ideas, he'd hit an alarm and before they knew it the cops were on them and the little man ended up with a bullet between the eyes.
With nothing to loose and no way out but a tiny backdoor that lead into the alley, Nathan was beside himself with excited joy. A shootout! Oh how splendid! Never had one before. If he lived that would be quite the experience. On the other hand he could die, and if he did all the more interesting.
Now, behind the candy-bar stand, Metal-Mouth popped up occasionally from his shelter to blast a few shots into the red and blue lights, not really aiming for someone. He was more like the little child that ran around screaming with the other children. He didn't have a reason; he just wanted to be part of the fun.
As he did this, he didn't notice a strand of his perfectly slicked back hair had fallen forward into his face, he merely continued to giggle and laugh as the fun continued.
His thugs didn't seem quite as enthralled.
"Man down man down!"
The shout seemed to shoot between the officers like a message on a wire. One of the cops had been hit during the shoot out. The thugs inside seemed to be desperate, unwilling to talk and all aiming to kill. The security cameras, before being shot out, had indicated that Metal-Mouth was the ringleader. Ever since his prank on the city months ago he'd become famous. The new title of "Metal-Mouth" was in the papers. All because of that strange wire smile he had. It was horrific, like something out of a nightmare. After that not much had been heard of him, and now tonight this random store. It really didn't make sense for him to do something to trivial after such a big heist. But then again even that Metal-Mouth would need money.
At least thats what Sergeant Vale supposed. Standing behind the door of her cop car, her gun aimed, her red hair tied back, she was the first to realize that the man hit had been her partner. Howey had gotten a little too lackadaisical in his cover and ended up on the pavement, his brains blown out. She didn't have time to be shocked or angry.
"Alright, pull back! I want all cops out of sight!" The police chief commanded.
"Chief!" Vanessa hurried over to him, going behind the squad cars, "What about that alleyway?"
"It's too dangerous. We'll wait for the swat team." He said.
Vanessa frowned. She was pissed that her partner had been the one to get blown away. He had a wife and kids that would find out the sad news. She wasn't going to tell them that she'd stood by and done nothing after what had happened.
Following her instincts, Vanessa looked towards the alley. It was not too far off and out of reach of gunfire from the storefront. Without another thought for her own safety she headed in that direction...

He had arrived just in time to see the police officer have a bullet enter his cranium. Clenching his fists, he gritted his teeth, and surveyed the scene before him. Even after three years of donning the cape and cowl, he still couldn’t get used to sight of good people dying. All it did was reinforce the fact that Gotham needed Batman to clean it’s city streets.
Front door is out of the question. Too open. Too many cops. Too good a risk of getting caught in crossfire. I’m no good to anyone in jail or dead.[/I]
Then he found it. The alleyway beside the building had a side entrance into the store. Perfect chance for him to get inside undetected by both sides. Pulling out his grappling gun, he fired it across the street unnoticed due to the loud gunfire below. As he swung through the air towards the alleyway, he pulled out a small batarang, which he threw it at the light over the doorway to provide himself with total concealment for when he landed. Just as he was landing, he heard the order for the police officers to fall back. To him that signalled that S.W.A.T. would soon be arriving on the scene and that he would have to work fast.
Arriving at the door, he wasn’t surprised to find it locked. Reaching into his utility belt, he pulled out two lockpicks and unlocked the door. Placing the small metal tools back into his belt, he heard the sound of approaching footsteps. Thanks to the nightvision lenses in his cowl, he was able to see Sergeant Vanessa Vale, daughter of the woman his father once dated, coming up on the alleyway towards him. Silently he stepped back away from the door so that when she reached it, she wouldn’t bump into him.
“Turn back Sergeant,”[/b][/I] he said from behind in his usual raspy, stone brass voice. “You can’t take on those men alone and from what I can see, it appears you only have one spare mag left and only three shots left in your sidearm currently.”[/b][/I]
He had a feeling that the woman wasn’t going to listen. From all the reports he had heard and read about her, she was a strong willed woman who like do things her way. While he respected that, it put into this situation that was well over her head.

She hated to admit it, but Vanessa jumped when she heard the voice and raised her handgun, directly aiming into the shadows where the voice came from. After a second she slowly lowered it and narrowed her eyes. Who was this guy? Even though the Batman might know a lot about her, she'd only heard some things about him since her coming to Gotham. And mostly she thought the stories were a prank of some kind the guys told the newbies on the beat.
Stepping forward, she peered at the masked man, still not sure if he was what they said he was or if he was just some nut who got himself in the crossfire of things. In either case she was annoyed that he'd tell her to back off at all. She was very stubborn and the type of woman that didn't like commands.
"It will be enough." She said. She had confidence in her ability. After all a lot of her superiors before she came to gotham had suggested she become a snipper for the S.W.A.T team, but she much preferred being a cop. It kept her busy.

“No. It won’t. They have higher caliber rounds, outnumber you, and have cover. You may be a crack shot Sergeant, but the odds are against you. Return to the other officers and let me handle this. You’ll only get yourself killed and Gotham has already lost one good officer tonight, it doesn’t need to lose another.”[/b][/I]
Stepping past her, he moved to the door he had just unlocked, and stepped inside. Looking around, it appeared to be a combination of a storage room, office, and employee lounge. Slowly, he made his way to the open doorway that led out into the store itself, and scanned the area. From his current position he knew he would be able to destroy ninety percent of the lighting in the store, more than enough for his purposes.
Taking cover against the wall, Batman reached into his utility belt to retrieve several batarangs he would need accomplish his goal. All he had to do now was just hope nobody did anything to ruin his plan.

Vanessa scowled and opened her mouth to speak but then closed her lips again. He was right. She watched him slip into the door. She didn't follow...
Inside, as the officers backed off the gunfire slowed but did no cease. Metal frowned but instantly he got onto his feet in a crouching position and started to grumble. "No fun. No fun at all. Just when the brains were starting to splatter."
He reached into his jacked and took out a strand of firecrackers, the loud kind (is there any other?) and tossed them at the storefront. They landed just below the ledge amid all the broken glass. He then started to make his way along the shelf, an occasional giggle bursting from his lips as if he just couldn't hold them back. Still crouched, he peered around the edge, aimed, and fired.
The crackers went off like a shot, making even his men jump and they started firing all over again. At this rate they'd all be out of ammunition by the time the S.W.A.T team showed up. Perfect.
Something caught his attention then. A strange... smell? He sniffed and looked around. Following the scent he continued to crawl at a strange couched position towards the back of the store. On his way he grabbed a bottle of vodka. He told himself maybe it would be for his own little party later...

As he stood there in silence, something had caught his attention. In between all the gunfire, sirens, yelling, and laughter he had heard another sound. The sound of bottles hitting against each other. It was a brief sound, barely audible, but he heard it and it was close.
Looking around the room, his emerald eyes fell upon the lightswitch on the other side of the threshold. If he had moved in that direction then he would reveal his presence to anyone looking at the back room. A risk he couldn’t take.
Alright Thomas. Change of plans. If they are coming back here and looking to make a break for it then I need to do something to keep them inside the store.[/I]
Placing the batarangs back inside his belt, he then retrieved several smoke and flash bang pellets. Taking a deep breath, Batman threw the smoke pellets down at the threshold, and threw the flash bang pellets deeper into the store.
Once he heard the flash bangs explode, he charged into the store, and at Metal. Lifting the man up, locked him into a front face lock, and slammed his elbow into the man’s back. Then he saw two of the goons raising their firearms at him. Throwing the scarred man to the ground, he dove for cover himself as he was getting shot at.
Great plan Thomas. Really great plan.[/i]

Before he could even register what was going on, a large black shadow came out of the back-room and grabs Metal in an abrasive headlock. The wind knocked out of him, he felt a hard blow come down on his back and he hit the floor. Seeing stars for a split second, Metal lifted his head and shook it. He raised a hand to his hair to find it quite messy and an instant snarl came from him as he jumped back to his feet. The smoke was thick and he had to wait a moment before realizing the attack was near a freezer to keep himself from getting shot.
He giggled, reaching into his jacket and brining out a little vile of his own concoction. He smashed it at his feet and instantly the smoke in the air started to clear. He breathed in deeply, smelling the chemical reaction. It was lovely.
He reached down to get his dropped wine bottle. Now it was shattered in pieces and he picked it up by the neck.
"So that was the smell. Seriously my good fellow how long has it been since you've had a decent bath?" He mused. Holding up his hands, the gunfire ceased and he jump forward, not really attacking but just throwing the remains of the bottle at Batman, letting it shatter above his head.
"What a party crasher."

Kipping up from the floor, the Dark Knight stared down Metal as the scarred man jumped towards him, and threw the vodka bottle at him. Luckily Thomas didn’t need to move as the bottle flew over him and smashed against the wall behind him.
“Well what can I say? You throw lousy parties,”[/b][/I] he said as he narrowed his eyes. “I’m only going to give you this offer once. Surrender willingly or I beat you into submission. Either choice is fine by me Metal-Mouth.”[/b][/I]
It had taken him several moments but now that he had a good look at Metal he knew who he was. He remembered reading about him in the paper and hearing the story from his nephew about their run in together. So now that he knew who he was dealing with, he was perplexed by the crime. His previous scheme and this one were like night and day. It was almost like he was doing it just for the sake of doing it, as if there was no reason behind the crimes. Which, if that was the case, would make Metal-Mouth a very dangerous adversary.

Metal seemed to melt into a disappointed frown. "Aww. It was a lot of fun I think." He shrugged and held out his hands, palms up. "So be it Batty. Cuff me. Take me to the big house or...er... what ever it is you americans call it." He grinned then and his eyes narrowed, looking the Batman over, almost daring him to do it.
As the exchange happened the thugs jumped to their feet and several of them started to make their way towards the back of the building. Outside there seemed to be a lot going on.

He had to admit that he was more than surprised by how quickly Metal had given up. Something about it all just seemed far to easy. Judging from what Nightwing had told him, Metal-Mouth didn’t seem like the type to go down without a fight.
His thugs however were more predictable. They certainly weren’t in any mood to get arrested with their boss and attempted to flee outside to where Vanessa was. As much as he knew he had to take the scared psycho into custody, he also wanted to make sure that Sergeant Vale was safe as well. Before he could act though, he heard the commotion from outside that sounded like backup had arrived for the young Sergeant.
Reaching into his belt, he pulled out a pair of batcuffs, and made his way over to Metal. “You made the right choice.”[/b][/i]

Metal merely grinned, holding still as Batman approached. "There's something you should know about me Bats." He said as the cuffs were snapped on. "I'm also secretly Spiderman."
He waited a split second to see expression on the masked vigilantes face before his middle and ringer fingers bent inward and pressed just below his palms. As he did a shot of clear liquid squirted from the cufflinks on his wrists. It was mace. Well sort of. About ten times stronger, Metal aimed to shoot into his eyes.
Seeing what their boss had done, the thugs moved in, all aiming kill shots. There were three remaining.
Suddenly,
'POP! POP! POP!'
Three gun shots and three bodies fell.
"HUUUH!?" The comical sound came directly from Metal-Mouth as he turned to see the redheaded police woman standing, her gun aiming at him.
Vanessa had waited outside until backup arrived. She stopped S.W.A.T before it busted in the back, telling them there were civilians inside. When the gunfire started all over again she knew things had gone sour for the Batman and ventured inside to see for herself.
After shooting down three attackers she aimed for the clownish freak. "Drop any weapons and get on the ground!" She shouted, her voice powerful and commanding.

When Metal had said that he was Spiderman, Thomas was about to comment when he got sprayed in the face with mace. Luckily the lenses in his cowl had protected his eyes, but not his tastebuds. The mace had spilled into his mouth and left him with a very bad taste.
Annoyed, Batman drove his knee into the criminal’s mid-section. Once Metal was heeled over, he had turned his attention to the three thugs who were aiming at him, only to be surprised at the sound of the three gunshots incapacitating them.
Not a bad shot. Not at all what I expected.[/I]
When she ordered Metal to the ground, he didn’t give the man a chance to move, as he put him on the ground for her with a solid punch to the jaw.
“Good work Sergeant,”[/b][/I] he complimented.
Letting his cape drape over him, the Caped Crusader made his way casually to the store’s exit. Now that the situation was resolved, there was no reason for him to stick around for idle chit-chat.

Metal-Mouth fell to the floor, seeming unconcious due to the hit. His other men were all either on the ground wounded or under arrest. It didn't take long for the S.W.A.T team to see that everything was under control even though it was a mess.
'Good work Sergeant'
Vanessa looked up at the Batman and frowned. He seemed to be walking towards the storefront and she jogged after him, again raising her gun. "Wait! You too Batman. You're under arrest. Put your hands on the back of your head and get on the floor!"

He wasn’t surprised that she was trying to arrest him as well. She was a police officer after all and he was a vigilante who operated outside of the law. Unlike his father, he didn’t have a Commissioner Gordon on his side to protect him.
“You’re not going to arrest me Sergeant,”[/b][/I] he said as he continued towards the exit.
He knew she wasn’t going to shoot him. She was one of the good guys. She wasn’t the type to shoot one in cold blood. So he towards her until the barrel of her gun was resting square against his chest.
“If you are going to shoot me, now is your chance,”[/b][/I] he said as his gaze met hers.

The challenge was there, and it made Vanessa’s stubborn streak ignite. Even so she knew he was right. She couldn’t shoot him like this. After all he’d helped them stop the shootout and on top of that his armor was probably bullet proof. Even so she couldn’t just let him walk away either.
Her eyes locked on his and she almost wanted to ask him to solve this problem for her. She shook her head slightly, keeping eye contact as she reached for her cuffs.
“I can’t just let you go.”
