Vanessa didn’t like this place. It had such bad vibes. Even just being on the same street as the asylum one could feel the terrible presence of all the evil it had held once within it. She didn’t know how the doctors and the nurses managed it.
Not far away from the building some old buildings and the old railroad tracks houses many homeless people, and within the small community of homeless people were criminals. This was a well known fact, and even though most knew about it not many would dare to venture there alone. Especially if one was a woman. However, Vanessa wasn’t a typical woman.
Dressed in jeans and a coat, Vanessa shivered and watched the puffs of air leave her lips while she waited for the Batman. It felt like it might snow soon, and she wondered if maybe she’d misunderstood his instructions. Under her jacket Vanessa had her gun in her holster for protection, but being so close to Arkham, even she felt her nerves starting to wear…

Ever since he had gotten the records from Vanessa, his task of tracking the mysterious serial killer had been easier. There were hidden messages in the all of the murders that had helped to figure out not only the pattern of the killer, but his whereabouts. Once he was sure he knew where the killer would be striking next, he sent Vale a message to meet him there.
Using the modified, high tech, two-man fighter jet that was known as the Batwing, the Dark Knight made his way to the homeless community not far from Arkham Asylum. Once over the community, the Batman used the exit under the jet to propel down to the ground below where Vale was waiting. Landing only several feet behind her, he walked up behind her, and turned his head towards her.
“I see you made it Sergeant,”[/b][/I] he said in his stony voice. “You sure you are ready for this?”[/b][/I]
As he spoke, puffs of air escaped his lips thanks to the coldness of the air. Luckily for the Dark Knight, his suit was insulated so the coldness didn’t effect him. He could still feel it against the uncovered part of his face however.

Vanessa nodded, "I'm not as frail as I seem Batman." She said as she tossed her read hair back over her shoulders. Reaching into her jacket she took her pistol from the holster and held it in both hands. "Lead the way."
She pushed back the nerves she felt and thought about all the other times she'd been in this situation, although usually there were other police officers there and she wasn't going after someone who had killed her mother.
Breathing through her nose, she felt her heart in her chest start to pulse harder and her breath quicken. Every second brought her closer and closer to the chance she'd waited years for...

“I’m well aware of that Sergeant,”[/b][/I] he stated. “If you were then you wouldn’t make it in this city and you’d just be another victim that I’d have to save or death to investigate.”[/b][/I]
Nodding, the Batman led the way towards the small town. As they strolled through the town, he could see the eyes on him and the red-head from the shadows. The looks though weren’t of fear. They were of relief. They knew why the Batman was there and for once he was there to save them, not arrest them.
Beside them a garbage bin housed a large fire, or at least it did until a homeless man knocked it over as he ran towards the pair. As he fell towards them, Gotham’s protector turned, and caught the man. Lifting him to his feet, he held him firmly in his place as he glared at him.
“You know who we’re here for. Where is he?”[/b][/I]
In response the man could only turn and point down the alleyway from which he had come from. Letting go of the man, Batman turned to Vale, and nodded for her to follow him down the alleyway. Silently he made his way down the faintly lit alley. He had become such a master of stealth that even walking at a normal pace, his footsteps didn’t make any crunching noises in the snow. It was almost as if he was walking about it rather than on it.

Vanessa walked along beside him, having to step twice for every one of his strides. She frowns and raises her gun when the man starts to run but the Batman was on it and he grabbed the hobo to demand the whereabouts of the killer. The frightened man pointed down a nearby Alley and suddenly Vanessa felt a foreboding feeling. Of all the stakeouts she'd done, none of it held a candle to this. A shiver ran through her and she hung back a moment when the Batman moved to walk down the alley. She didn't want to admit it, but she was scared...

Slowly and cautiously he made his way down the alleyway towards the shack. If his theory was correct, and he knew it was, then the serial killer he was tracking would be getting ready to take out his next victim. The only part he didn't get was why he was doing all of it. Whoever the murderer was had some serious issues to say the least.
As they got closer, he turned his head slightly to see Vanessa out of the corner of his emerald eyes. He could see the fear and nervousness coming over her, not that he could blame her. When he had gone to face Hush the first time he had donned the cape and cowl he was full of fear, but like him Vale would conquer her fear.
As he was about say something to her when a scream and crash filled the air. Turning his attention back to the shack, he ran full out towards it. Reaching the door, he paused for a moment to let Vale catch up before kicking it in. Running into the room, he took in the scene of the man holding a pistol at a woman's head. When the man noticed the Batman and the red-head, he immediately pulled the woman in front of him, and put the gun to her head.
"Let the woman go,"[/b][/i] he said in a very final tone of voice.

A sudden scream snapped Vanessa out of her moment of hesitation and she rushed to catch up to Batman. Her gun out and aimed she was prepared to do whatever it took to help the poor woman. As they entered the shack she saw the back of a man leaning over his victim and she was ready to take him down. But first she wanted to see his face.
No sooner had she thought this though, her moment of opportunity passed when the man snatched up his victim and turned to face them with his own gun to her head. Vanessa was pissed to say the least and she growled, wanting to empty her gun into the mans chest just because he was threatening the life of another innocent woman. But when her eyes reached his face, her expression changed. She’d seen this man before a long time ago.
It was back when she’d been just a little girl. She remembered a day in central park back when her father would come to visit her. Her father. She remembered him smiling and happy, he looked and behaved the way any father should, but looking at him now he just seemed callous and savage.
Lowering her gun, Vanessa suddenly felt a tight pain in her heart. She realized that she hadn’t only lost her mother the day of the killing but her father as well.
“D-Daddy?” She managed to squeak out, staring at the vicious man.

Dammit. I can’t believe I’ve been tracking her father this whole time. I should have dug into this situation before bringing her along. How could I be so stupid!? There is no way this is going to end well. Just another damn failure on my part. Great job Tommy, great job.[/I]
He let out a sigh of frustration at the whole situation that had know went from bad to worse. He knew that he would need to put an end to this situation fast or it was going to get to be worse, much worse than they already were, as it dragged on.
“Hey Princess,”[/b] said Vale’s father. “This any way to treat your dear old dad?”[/b]
“I’m not going to tell you again,”[/b][/I] the Dark Knight said quickly before Vale could respond. “Let the woman go and you might walk out of here.”[/b][/I]

The little girl inside Vanessa suddenly got forced back as she brought the gun back up to aim at the man who had hurt so many people. "Put the gun down!" She commanded, shifting a little before she went on to say, "I can't believe all this time you were the one that killed my mom!"
She took a threatening step forward. If his gun went off, so would hurts and there would be two dead bodies. Although having this woman get hurt was not something Vanessa wanted to have happen, there was no way she would let the murderer go free now. Not after all this time...

“Your mother used me!”[/b] yelled Harold at his daughter. “You shut your mouth!”[/b] he yelled as he pressed the handgun hard against the woman’s temple.
It was easy to see that Vale’s father was unstable. It seemed that when he snapped all those years ago that he never quite regained back any part that he had lost. At least Vale seemed to be able to push ahead through everything that was unfolding around her. It seemed that again he had underestimated her and found himself admiring her more and more. In a way, she kind of reminded him of his sister and mother.
“Now the two of you back away for this bitches brains get splattered all over the wall,”[/b] he ordered.
“Kill her Powers and there won’t be a force in this world that will stop me from breaking you,”[/b][/I] the Dark Knight said coldly.

Vanessa didn't waver, when her father accused Vicki of using him she knew he'd lost it. Her mother had had nothing. Why would she use him? Her eyes narrowed.
Carefully, she took a step forward towards her father, "No Batman. He's mine!" Her expression turned cold and he finger rested on the trigger finger. She took another step towards him and then another...

At first he had thought that the man was bluffing and that he wouldn’t give up the only leverage he had, but once Vanessa started moving forward he saw a glimmer in the man’s eyes. He had seen that same glimmer before as a kid thirteen years ago. It was the same glimmer that Thomas Elliot had in his eyes as he tried to kill him with a bullet from his gun, a bullet that ended up killing his father.
“Wait Vale! Don’t!”[/b][/I]
“Should have listened Princess.”[/b]
Then the silence that seemed to last for an eternity was suddenly shattered by the sound of the bullet leaving Harold’s weapon and the sound of brain matter being plastered against the side of the wall. Then the lifeless body of the woman was hurled towards Vale who had been foolish enough to move too close to her father to dodge the oncoming corpse.
Luckily for Vanessa, she had back up. Darting at the corpse, the Batman scooped it up in his arms, and tumbled away from the pair as Harold’s pistol was now pointing at his daughter. As he turned to look at the situation unfolding, he reached into his utility belt as Harold’s finger was already in the process of squeezing the trigger once more.
Dammit Vale.[/i]

In those seconds after the gun went off Vanessa’s whole world got turned upside down. Never before had she made such a stupid mistake, she’d let her emotions get the better of her and it’s cost was the life of an innocent woman.
It seemed to happen in slow motion, the gory covered body of the woman was coming at her, then there was the whirl of the Batman’s body moving in front of her, intervening before it hit Vanessa. Her eyes were transfixed on her father’s face. He wasn’t at all the man she’d remembered. He was a ruthless killer and he had to be stopped.
The explosion of the gun sounded in her ears, but it hadn’t come from her father’s gun, but her own.

The shots rang through the air and immediately his eyes darted to Vale. Replacing his batarangs back into his utility belt, he stood up, and moved away from the body of the woman her father had just killed towards Vale.
Two people dead and I could have stopped it all. How could I have been so damn stupid.[/I]
Setting a hand on Vale’s shoulder, he looked at the body of Vanessa’s father. Again since she had come into his life he had caused her misery. He had taken up mantle because he had wanted to help people and tonight he failed three times within five minutes.
“I’m sorry about all of this,”[/b][/I] he said with a remorseful tone after a long moment of silence.

Just as everything had been in slow motion before, no sooner did the gun go off did everything speed up. She wished she could stop it, keep the bullet from hitting her dad. But she watched the screen almost as if watching a movie. His body collapsed and she heard Batmans voice.
Shock swept over her and it was all Vanessa could do to just stare. The gun fell from her grasp, hitting the ground before she covered her face with them, not wanting to see the sight. Inwardly many different levels of her sanity snapped and she let loose with a wild scream, the sound muffled by her hands.
